Common use

Miconazole is an antifungal medication used to treat various fungal and yeast infections of the skin, mouth, vagina, and nails. It works by disrupting the fungal cell membrane, leading to the death of the fungus. Common conditions treated include athlete’s foot, ringworm, candidiasis, and vaginal yeast infections. It is available in different forms including creams, powders, sprays, oral gels, and suppositories.

Dosage and direction

The dosage and form of miconazole depend on the type and location of the infection. Typically, it is applied topically 1–2 times daily for skin infections, or used as a vaginal suppository once daily for 3–7 days. Oral gel should be held in the mouth for as long as possible before swallowing. Always follow your doctor’s or pharmacist’s instructions and complete the full course even if symptoms improve.

Precautions

Before using miconazole, inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a history of allergies to antifungal medications. Avoid contact with the eyes when using topical forms. If irritation or burning worsens, discontinue use and seek medical advice. Vaginal products may weaken latex condoms or diaphragms, so alternative contraception is recommended during treatment.

Contraindications

Miconazole should not be used by individuals with known hypersensitivity to miconazole or any of its components. It is not intended for systemic fungal infections. Avoid using it on broken or inflamed skin unless directed by a healthcare professional. Patients with liver disease should use systemic forms with caution under medical supervision.

Possible side effect

Common side effects include mild burning, itching, redness, or skin irritation at the application site. Vaginal use may cause discomfort, cramping, or headache. Oral forms can lead to nausea, altered taste, or mouth irritation. Severe allergic reactions are rare but require immediate medical attention.

Drug interaction

Miconazole, especially oral or vaginal forms, may interact with blood thinners like warfarin, increasing bleeding risk. It may also affect the action of oral hypoglycemics, phenytoin, or statins. Topical forms generally have fewer interactions but should still be used cautiously with other skin products. Inform your doctor or pharmacist of all medications you are using.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, apply or take it as soon as you remember. If it’s close to the time of your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one—do not double up. Consistency is important to clear the infection. Resume your regular dosing schedule afterward.

Overdose

An overdose of topical or vaginal miconazole is unlikely but may cause skin irritation or discomfort. Ingesting large amounts of oral forms may result in nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain. Seek medical attention if accidental ingestion of a large amount occurs, especially in children. Always use as directed to avoid complications.

Storage

Store miconazole at room temperature (15°C to 30°C / 59°F to 86°F), away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep tubes, bottles, or applicators tightly closed. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
